I'm sorry, it is. Even though it is located on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill, I have to give it some serious points. The landscaping, the flowers, the architecture, the general enjoyment. All better. Maybe I have just been going to Duke Gardens for too long, and have become bored. I don't know, I just enjoyed my visit to Coker Arboretum, this morning, more than I can say. The wisteria was intoxicating, the indigo was addictive, and the shade was abounding.

But, in Duke's defense, I do have to ask...What's the big deal with this thing? I don't get it.

Perhaps because the Old Well was originally erected when the campus first was in 1789? Even the current well dates to 1897, 5 years after Trinity College moved to Durham and 27 years before it would become Duke. For many years it was the only water source on campus. It was also commonly believed that a drink from it on the first day of classes would bring good luck (or all A's).
So, basically, it's the history behind it, which really, Duke can't touch.
Ouch. Fair enough. But, I have to say, as campus landmarks go, Duke Chapel kicks the Old Well's arse.
